The Yeh Shyr-Tau literary memorial museum, formerly the forestry affairs office, opened its doors in 2012 as Taiwan's first important writer memorial hall. This nearly 100-year-old building has been transformed into a modern space that unites literature with emotional elements. The goal is to create a literary experience that resonates with visitors on a sensory level.
The design team at FunDesign.tv has curated a range of experiences that cater to each of the five senses. From visually captivating installations to the sounds of Mr. Yeh's favorite classical music playing in the background, every detail has been carefully considered to immerse visitors in the world of literature.
One of the highlights of the design is the creation of a special beverage called "ink coffee." Drawing inspiration from the Chinese expression "Drink ink," which refers to a learned person or a writer, locally roasted coffee is served in an ink tank. This unique drink not only pays homage to Yeh Shyr-Tau's literary legacy but also adds an element of surprise and delight to the overall experience.
The museum's interior has been thoughtfully designed to incorporate Yeh's elements into the space. From text silhouettes adorning the walls to table decorations featuring excerpts of famous sentences or short essays, visitors are surrounded by the writer's words. Whether exploring the exhibition or simply enjoying a leisurely afternoon, the literary heritage of Yeh Shyr-Tau comes to life in this atmospheric setting.
The renovation project, which started in October 2021, was completed in November 2021. The museum now spans a total of 270 square meters across two floors. The second floor features a long corridor adorned with the names of characters from Yeh's novels. The overlapping curtains in the corridor allude to the multiverse time and space constructed by Yeh's novels, inviting visitors to step into the world of literature.
Through extensive research and the use of historical documents, the design team was able to recreate Yeh Shyr-Tau's experiences in various periods. The exhibition showcases texts, photos, and videos that provide a comprehensive understanding of Yeh's life and work. The immersive presentation allows visitors to capture the essence of Yeh's novels and easily share their experiences on social media.
The Yeh Shyr-Tau literary memorial museum, with its engaging and open approach to public interaction, has become a hub for literature enthusiasts and the general public alike. By incorporating exhibitions, catering, cultural and creative stores, and market spaces, the museum offers a multifaceted experience that celebrates Yeh's literary legacy and fosters a deeper connection with his work.
This innovative design by FunDesign.tv has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This accolade acknowledges the project's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness in creating a literary compound space that authentically engages all five senses. The Yeh Shyr-Tau literary memorial museum stands as a testament to the power of art, architecture, and design in enriching our lives and making the world a better place.
